Posted February 10, 2018 09:51:33The Brown University football stadium that is being built by a Chinese developer has been described as “the biggest ever”, with the university announcing it will generate $7 billion for the community.
The stadium is expected to be completed in the next six years and will have a capacity of around 100,000, making it the largest university football stadium in the world.
“The Big Bang on Campus will be a huge step forward for Brown,” university president Peter Fassbender said in a statement.
“It is an opportunity for our community to come together, learn from each other, and celebrate a special moment in the history of the university.”
Brown’s football team plays its home matches at the venue, which was built by Chinese company Jiangsu Investment Group and will include a new $2.6 billion stadium.
Mr Fassbenders university also unveiled a new student housing complex, a $500 million new athletic complex, and a new recreation centre.
The $7.2 billion plan includes a $100 million “cash” fund to fund the construction of the stadium, and $300 million to pay for infrastructure improvements.
“With the $7,000 deposit on the land, the Big Bang will be built, funded and operational by the community,” Mr Fassabaugh said.
“To help fund it, we are going to be investing in new, better-equipped infrastructure and new facilities, and building a new football facility with a capacity exceeding 100,00.”
Mr Faddings university also announced it would provide financial assistance to more than 700 local businesses and organisations, including arts, cultural, recreational, sporting, leisure and hospitality.
Mr Henshaw said the university was pleased with the announcement.
“We will continue to be very much committed to making Brown University the best it can be and we are confident we will succeed,” he said.
