An open forum on campus for students of all genders has been flooded with posts about trans students who have been sexually assaulted, threatened with rape, or threatened with murder.
“They are just so ashamed,” wrote one student on the University of Maryland’s Facebook page.
The comments are from one student, who asked, “Why are there so many trans students?”
“There are so many cis students who are the ones who perpetrate these crimes,” said another.
The anonymous user added that “they are a lot more likely to perpetrate this kind of crime against trans people.”
Other posts were supportive, but also pointed out that “it’s not like trans people have been targeted or have had any sort of violence.”
The forum has now been deleted.
“We’re not just against trans students,” one student said.
“I know trans people who are trans people.
I know trans kids who are cis people.
And it’s not the case.
I don’t think the vast majority of trans people in the world are the sort of people who can be targeted by rapists or serial killers.”
A spokesperson for the university said in a statement that the Facebook post was “reprehensible” and that the university “remains focused on the safety of its students.”
The University of Virginia, the University at Buffalo, and the University in Illinois were among the other schools to respond to the post on the forum.
