Mechanical engineering is the discipline of study which involves engineering physics, engineering mathematics, and material science principles to design, analyze, manufacture and maintain mechanical systems. Mechanical engineering as the name suggests is a science of machines. It is one of the oldest and widest engineering disciplines. Long years ago people had discovered levers and pulleys to make their day-to-day work easier. This shows their mechanical knowledge and understanding.

Apart from other engineering degrees, this is more complicated and broadest field of study which spans from designing a screw to complex engines of aircrafts. And this is the reason that it attracts more students compared to some other streams.

The mechanical engineering field requires an understanding of core areas including mechanics, dynamics, thermodynamics, materials science, structural analysis, and electricity. The work field of a mechanical engineers are designing and analyzing manufacturing plants, industrial equipment and machinery, heating and cooling systems, transport systems, aircraft, watercraft, robotics, medical devices, weapons, electric generators, internal combustion engines, and steam and gas turbines as well as power-using machines, such as refrigeration and air-conditioning systems.

A mechanical engineers typically do the following:

  • Examine problems to see how mechanical and thermal devices might help tackle the problem.
  • Develop and test prototypes of devices they design.
  • Design or redesign mechanical and thermal devices using analysis and computer-aided design.
  • Analyze the test results and change the design as needed.
  • Keep eyes on the manufacturing process for the device.

Career and jobs after mechanical engineering

As the stream associated with designing, testing, researching and assuring the performance of machine and machine parts, mechanical engineers has vast ocean of opportunities in their fields. Every sector or stream needs machines to operate and hence there is a need of the related engineers. So the mechanical engineering is the core of other engineerings too.

Fields directly related to the mechanical engineering

  • Gadjets engineering
  • Aerospace engineering
  • Automotive engineering
  • Contracting civil engineering
  • Control and instrumentation engineering
  • Maintenance engineering
  • Nuclear engineering

The above fields are closely related to the stream where the engineers have core and vital roles to play. There are also some other sectors and fields where mechanical engineers needed for their technical support such as Mining engineer, Patent attorney, Production manager, Technical sales engineer, Water engineer, Corporate investment banker and much more.

Generally mechanical engineers work with other same degree holder as a team on various projects. They also have to handle situation alone when needed. But in some situations they work with electrical engineers, electronics engineers, nuclear engineers collectively on advanced projects like rocket technology, satellite systems etc.

Salaries of mechanical engineers

Salary of a mechanical engineers as that of other engineering branch students depends highly on the college where the student is graduated. If you have a degree from top reputed colleges, then you will be hired by top class companies and will be paid highly that worth your skills and hard work. The average salaries also depends little bit on market trends.

In 2016, the median annual income of mechanical engineers in the U.S. workforce was $80,580. The median income was highest when working for the government ($92,030), and lowest in education ($57,090). In 2014, the total number of mechanical engineering jobs was projected to grow 5% over the next decade. As of 2018, the average starting salary was $90,800 with a bachelor’s degree.
